Passing your VicRoads driving test is always easy and simple with Sharmas Driving school (SDS). Our 30 years of glorious experience in training and guiding learners drivers along with thousands of drive tests, has helped our students pass in the first attempt.
We at SDS are often asked the question on the reasons one can fail a driving test. Though the reasons can be many, the following are the top 10 reasons (not in any particular order) we believe, one fails –
- Feeling too nervous and stressed
It is quite natural to feel nervous and stressed when it comes to any sort of test. No matter how good you drive, the fear of another person (LTO) judging you doesn’t work well. In this nervousness, one tends to forget the road rules and other vehicle checks thereby making mistakes.
One’s confidence level is often directly linked to the level of nerves they experience when being tested. Driving test nerves and confidence can also be affected where there exists a genuine fear of failure. Learner drivers appearing for the test worry a lot on the outcome of the test. Also experiences of friends/ family members failing multiple times and the fear of being seen as a failure are the common thoughts by learner drivers. In reality, everyone is different. We all learn in different ways. By accepting that you are on your individual journey and just focusing on what you need to do during the drive test helps a lot.
People are generally supportive and understanding of anyone preparing for a driving test. Understanding why you get nervous can really help you remain calm and reduce your nerves before and during your driving test. We at SDS understand the relationship between driving test nerves and confidence. With our specialist training, we can help you better manage stress and make you confident for the driving test.
- No experience and/or under prepared
Lack of practice and incompetence results in being under-prepared. Regardless of one’s confidence or experience, at least one lesson with a professional driving Instructor is very important to understand the VicRoads Graduated Licencing System. This prepares you well before your driving test. Once you know what is expected by the VicRoads Licence Testing Officer (LTO), your greatest fears will diminish.
“Our research shows that students/learners who opted for the mock test passed their actual drive test in their first go”
Getting professional driving lessons in Melbourne is highly recommended. SDS mock tests are popular and help our learners gain confidence and prepare well for the driving test. The mock test is an actual simulation of your drive test. Mock tests have boosted the confidence of our learner drivers as they are ready and know what is expected in their actual drive test. We train our learners and give them loads of practice on the drive test routes. More practice is given on test routes that are tricky and where people usually tend to make mistakes. It doesn’t matter if you are driving with us just before your driving test or have been driving with us for a period of time, we cover all aspects of what is expected in the driving test.

At SDS, one has a variety of driving lesson packages to choose as per their needs. Our professional and experienced instructors are calm, flexible and expert in teaching you all the simple tricks and tips in remembering the road rules. You do not want to be those learner drivers who are just taking a chance. It is emotionally heart-breaking going back for a second or third attempt at a driving test.
Learner drivers below 21 years, need to have 120 hours of supervised driving, of which 20 hours of night driving is a must. In these 120 hours, ideally they get to drive in all weather conditions, different road situations and at different times during the day. Hence young drivers have more driving practice and this experience helps them prepare well for all road conditions and situations. Therefore, good driving practice with a professional instructor will definitely help you gain confidence when attempting your drive test.
- Driving beyond the speed limit
We all know the fact that ‘Speed thrills but it kills’. This is another major reason learners fail. At no point in time, one can drive beyond the specified speed limit. Exceeding the speed limit by any amount for five seconds or more, exceeding the speed limit by 5km/h or more over the specified limit and exceeding the speed limit over the desired limit in a school zone when the school zone is in operation results in an immediate termination during the test. Learners get so carried away by other vehicles that they fail to check their speedometer thereby driving beyond the specified speed limit resulting in a fail in their drive test.
- Failing to give way, Failing to signal, or checking for other road users
One must be very observant while driving. We all know that the road is shared by pedestrians and many other vehicles. Driving is all about planning and anticipating what can / may happen next. This helps you prepare for situations which helps you to take control in case they go wrong. Failure to give way to other vehicles or road users when it’s their right of way, failure to indicate / signal (left or right), failing to check for other road users are some of the reasons for a failure in the driving test.
- Driving through a Stop sign or Red traffic light
You must STOP your car when you see a stop sign. The car must remain on a complete halt. Traffic lights are important as they are guiding the flow of vehicles to avoid collisions. Jumping Red traffic light is a big ‘NO’.
- Collision with another vehicle or mounting the kerb while driving
Mounting the kerb at any point of time while driving or while performing slow manoeuvres is not accepted in the drive test. Collision with another vehicle is a clear case of accident and unsafe driving resulting in a failure.
- Stopping the car in a dangerous position or doing anything else that creates an unsafe situation.
You cannot stop your car in a dangerous position leading to a collision. If any pedestrian or road user needs to take evasive action because your car is placed in a dangerous / unsafe position, it leads to a failure in the driving test. One must not put themselves or other road users at immediate risk of a crash or injury.
- Rushing while changing lanes
Majority of learner drivers freak out while changing lanes. One must remember there is no hurry to move into the other lane the moment an instruction is given by the LTO. A lane change must be made only when it’s safe to do so.
- Disobeying a direction given by your Licence Testing Officer (LTO) or a member of the Victoria Police
You must not disobey any instruction by the Victorian Police. Instructions given by your Licence Testing Officer (LTO) aren’t to be disobeyed either. These instructions help the LTO check on your alertness, planning and how well you execute them.
- Your action requires your driving instructor or testing officer interfere while you drive
At any point during your drive test, if your driving instructor or the LTO intervenes, it is considered a fail in the drive test. Your driving instructor cannot intervene by using either their break, accelerator or holding the steering wheel. Also the LTO must not intervene by providing verbal or physical assistance during the Drive Test.
“Your Driving Test is successful only if the VicRoads Licence Testing Officer acknowledges that you are a safe driver ”
Serious errors caused in a driving test will cause you to fail your drive test. The VicRoads Licence Testing Officer (LTO) is testing your ability to drive safely. To get a licence, they are ensuring that you are following all the road rules, observant, performing regular checks where required and driving safely keeping other road users and traffic in mind. One must pass the Drive Test to get a Victorian driver licence.
You will be penalised if your actions during the test create an unsafe situation. All these lead to an Immediate Termination Error where the test is stopped and you fail immediately.
We strongly advise you to book professional driving lessons from the best driving school if you wish to pass the drive test on your first attempt. This guarantees that you are well prepared and have the knowledge of driving safely following all the rules as per the VicRoads Graduated Licencing System.
